Freedom is surely the rarest and most difficult element to conserve in the world of fashion. And Mark Borthwick is without a doubt the freest character to have set foot in the industry. His most irreverent gesture must be the one that led him to create a series of images in which he combined the logos of the big brands with dim, dull, insignificant and totally interchangeable urban landscapes. Borthwick never cared about brands, only about people, spaces and light. And that unique look has created a solid and coherent body of work that becomes even stronger in his Xerox Books, replicas of his own books photocopied by himself, which add another layer of distance and irony to images already pared down to existentialism. It is an exercise of meta-edition that should make us reflect on nature and the meaning of our work.
